Tectonic
by Apollo
Dramatically improves terrain generation with towering mountains, deep valleys, and realistic landscapes while maintaining vanilla feel.
Overview
Tectonic by Apollo is an Overworld terrain overhaul that reshapes the land into towering mountains, deeper valleys, and more natural winding rivers while keeping the standard vanilla biome set intact. It rewrites the world generation noise rather than adding biomes, so the familiar forests, deserts, and plains stay in place but sit on far more dramatic landscapes. Because it changes generation, only chunks created after installation reflect the new terrain. The result feels like vanilla turned up, giving explorers grander vistas without an unfamiliar palette.
Suited to players starting a fresh world who want sweeping vanilla-style terrain with bigger mountains and rivers but no new biomes. It comes from Apollo, sits in the World Generation category, and is rated a simple, drop-in pack to run. Everything happens through vanilla data pack functions, so no mod loader such as Fabric or Forge is required to use it on Minecraft 1.20 through 1.21.4.
Features
- Enhanced mountain generation
- Deep river valleys
- Realistic terrain shapes
- Vanilla biome compatibility
How It Works
Under the hood, Tectonic relies on plain data pack mechanics rather than any client mod. Here is what happens in-game once it is loaded:
- 1It replaces vanilla worldgen noise settings to stretch terrain height and carve deeper valleys.
- 2River and continental noise is retuned so waterways wind more naturally across the map.
- 3Existing vanilla biomes are kept, so only the underlying terrain shape changes.
- 4Generation only runs on new chunks, leaving previously explored areas untouched at their old shape.
Supported Versions
Compatibility
May conflict with Terralith. Use one or the other.
- Conflicts with Terralith and other Overworld worldgen packs because they edit the same generation settings; run only one.
- Safe alongside structure, recipe, and advancement packs that do not modify Overworld terrain noise.
- Old and new terrain will not blend smoothly at the border between pre-existing and freshly generated chunks.
Tectonic is a pure data pack and does not ship a resource pack, so it changes server-side behaviour without altering textures, models or sounds on the client.

How to Install
Tectonic installs as a standard Java Edition data pack and runs on both singleplayer worlds and multiplayer servers. Recent 1.21 releases bumped the data pack format, so keep the pack's pack.mcmeta in step with your server version.
- 1.Download the Tectonic pack as a .zip and keep it zipped.
- 2.Open the target world folder — a singleplayer save under .minecraft/saves, or the world folder on your server.
- 3.Drop the .zip into that world's datapacks folder, creating the folder if it does not exist.
- 4.Load the world (or run /reload if it is already open) and run /datapack list to confirm it is enabled.
The pack is built for Minecraft 1.20 through 1.21.4, so it loads on vanilla Java without Fabric, Forge or any other mod loader. Add Tectonic before creating the world so all terrain generates with it; existing chunks keep their old shape and only newly generated chunks use the overhaul.

Can I use Tectonic together with Terralith?
It is not recommended. Both rewrite Overworld world generation and will conflict, so you should pick one Overworld worldgen pack.
Which Minecraft versions does Tectonic support?
It supports Java Edition 1.20, 1.20.1, 1.20.4, 1.21, and 1.21.4.
Do I need any mods to run Tectonic?
No. It is a vanilla data pack that changes world generation without Fabric or Forge.
Will it change terrain in my existing world?
Only newly generated chunks use the new terrain. Areas you already explored keep their original shape, so add it before exploring far.
Does Tectonic add new biomes?
No. It keeps the vanilla biome set and only reshapes the terrain into taller mountains, deeper valleys, and better rivers.
