Trade Rebalance (Vanilla Experiment)
by Mojang
Official vanilla experiment that rebalances villager trades. Biome-specific trades, adjusted prices, and new unique offers per biome.
Overview
Trade Rebalance is Mojang's official experimental data pack that reworks how villagers price and unlock their trades. It ties many offers to the biome a villager was cured or first traded in, so a desert librarian and a snowy one no longer sell identical books. Prices are retuned across professions and a handful of new high-value trades appear at master level. Because it is a built-in experiment, it is toggled on the Experiments screen rather than dropped into a folder by hand.
Aimed at players who want a fresh, more rewarding villager economy and are happy to start a new world to enable an official experiment. It comes from Mojang, sits in the Gameplay category, and is rated a simple, drop-in pack to run. Everything happens through the world's own data, so no mod loader such as Fabric or Forge is required to use it on Minecraft 1.20.2 through 1.21.
Features
- Biome-specific villager trades
- Rebalanced trade prices
- New unique trades per biome
- Official Mojang balance changes
How It Works
Under the hood, Trade Rebalance (Vanilla Experiment) relies on plain data pack mechanics rather than any client mod. Here is what happens in-game once it is loaded:
- 1Villager trade tables are swapped for biome-specific variants keyed to the villager's home biome
- 2Common essentials are repriced so they cost fewer emeralds to obtain early
- 3Master-level villagers gain unique offers not available in the default tables
- 4The changes apply through the Experiments toggle rather than a normal datapacks folder install
Supported Versions
Compatibility
Official vanilla experiment. Replaces default trade tables.
- Replaces the default villager trade tables, so it conflicts with community trade packs like Custom Villager Trades
- Being first-party, it stays consistent with vanilla mechanics and needs no mod loader
- Pick only one trade-modifying pack to avoid one overwriting the other's tables
Trade Rebalance (Vanilla Experiment) is a pure data pack and does not ship a resource pack, so it changes server-side behaviour without altering textures, models or sounds on the client.

How to Install
Trade Rebalance (Vanilla Experiment) installs as a standard Java Edition data pack and runs on singleplayer worlds. Recent 1.21 releases bumped the data pack format, so keep the pack's pack.mcmeta in step with your server version.
- 1.Download the Trade Rebalance (Vanilla Experiment) pack as a .zip and keep it zipped.
- 2.Open your singleplayer save folder (Saves menu → Open World Folder, or the .minecraft/saves path).
- 3.Drop the .zip into that world's datapacks folder, creating the folder if it does not exist.
- 4.Load the world (or run /reload if it is already open) and run /datapack list to confirm it is enabled.
The pack is built for Minecraft 1.20.2 through 1.21, so it loads on vanilla Java without Fabric, Forge or any other mod loader. As an official Mojang experiment it is enabled on the Experiments screen when creating a world, so it cannot be safely added to an existing save the way a normal data pack can.

Is this an official Mojang feature?
Yes. Trade Rebalance is a built-in experimental data pack made by Mojang, not a community creation, and it previews changes Mojang is testing for villager trading.
How do I turn it on?
Enable it from the Experiments screen when you create a new world. It is a world-level experiment, so it is switched on at creation rather than copied into a datapacks folder.
Can I add it to a world I already started?
No. Like other Mojang experiments it has to be enabled at world creation, so an existing save cannot opt in without starting fresh.
What actually changes about villagers?
Many trades become biome-specific, several prices are rebalanced, and master-level villagers gain new unique offers, making the trading economy feel more varied than the default tables.
Which Minecraft versions support it?
This experiment is listed for Minecraft 1.20.2, 1.20.4 and 1.21 on Java Edition.
Does it need any mods?
No. It is part of vanilla Java Edition as an experimental toggle, so no Fabric, Forge or other mod loader is required.
