Multiplayer Sleep

by Vanilla Tweaks

Only one player needs to sleep to skip the night. Essential for multiplayer servers where coordinating sleep is impractical.

Overview

Multiplayer Sleep rewires the night-skip rule so the day flips the instant a single player climbs into a bed, rather than waiting for the vanilla majority. It leans on the playersSleepingPercentage gamerule under the hood, which Vanilla Tweaks pre-sets to a one-player threshold. On busy SMP worlds that one change quietly removes the most common bedtime argument: nobody has to round everyone up first.

Built for small and mid-size survival servers where getting every online player into bed at the same time is unrealistic. It comes from Vanilla Tweaks, sits in the Gameplay category, and is rated a simple, drop-in pack to run. Everything happens through vanilla data pack functions, so no mod loader such as Fabric or Forge is required to use it on Minecraft 1.20 through 1.21.4.

Features

How It Works

Under the hood, Multiplayer Sleep relies on plain data pack mechanics rather than any client mod. Here is what happens in-game once it is loaded:

  1. 1Sleeping in any bed at night triggers the skip immediately for the whole world
  2. 2The pack sets the playersSleepingPercentage gamerule to 0 so one sleeper counts
  3. 3An optional broadcast tells everyone who started the sleep
  4. 4Phantoms still respect each player's individual insomnia counter

Supported Versions

1.201.20.11.20.41.211.21.4

Compatibility

Compatible with most data packs. No known conflicts.

  • Plays nicely with phantom-related packs since it does not touch the insomnia stat
  • If you also run Custom Sleep Percentage, pick one — both write the same gamerule

Multiplayer Sleep is a pure data pack and does not ship a resource pack, so it changes server-side behaviour without altering textures, models or sounds on the client.

How to Install

Multiplayer Sleep installs as a standard Java Edition data pack and runs on both singleplayer worlds and multiplayer servers. Recent 1.21 releases bumped the data pack format, so keep the pack's pack.mcmeta in step with your server version.

  1. 1.Download the Multiplayer Sleep pack as a .zip and keep it zipped.
  2. 2.Open the target world folder — a singleplayer save under .minecraft/saves, or the world folder on your server.
  3. 3.Drop the .zip into that world's datapacks folder, creating the folder if it does not exist.
  4. 4.Load the world (or run /reload if it is already open) and run /datapack list to confirm it is enabled.

The pack is built for Minecraft 1.20 through 1.21.4, so it loads on vanilla Java without Fabric, Forge or any other mod loader. Because it only changes a gamerule and a function, you can swap it in or out of a live world with no leftover state to clean up.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does only one player really need to sleep?

Yes. The pack lowers the sleep threshold to a single player, so the first person to lie down at night skips it for everyone on the server.

Will it stop phantoms from spawning for players who never sleep?

No. Skipping the night this way does not reset a player's personal insomnia timer, so anyone who avoids beds for three in-game days can still be hunted by phantoms.

Which Minecraft versions are supported?

It targets the 1.20 family through 1.21.4 on Java Edition, covering 1.20, 1.20.1, 1.20.4, 1.21 and 1.21.4.

Can I use this on a server and in singleplayer?

Yes. It installs the same way on a dedicated server's world folder or a singleplayer save, though the one-player rule is only meaningful with other people online.

Is it safe to remove later?

It is. Since it only sets a gamerule and adds a function, deleting the pack returns sleep behaviour to vanilla with no corruption risk.
