Anti Enderman Grief

by Vanilla Tweaks

Prevents Endermen from picking up and placing blocks. Stops the random terrain damage they cause.

Overview

Anti Enderman Grief stops the slow terrain damage Endermen cause as they wander, picking up and relocating blocks across your world. With this Vanilla Tweaks pack active, Endermen keep every other behaviour but lose the ability to carry blocks, so they no longer pock your landscape with holes and misplaced dirt. It targets only the carrying mechanic, leaving teleporting, aggression, and the Warden untouched. The result is a cleaner world without disabling mob griefing globally.

Best for builders and long-running survival worlds who want pristine terrain near bases without turning off mob griefing for every mob. It comes from Vanilla Tweaks, sits in the Quality of Life category, and is rated a simple, drop-in pack to run. Everything happens through vanilla data pack functions, so no mod loader such as Fabric or Forge is required to use it on Minecraft 1.20 through 1.21.4.

How It Works

Under the hood, Anti Enderman Grief relies on plain data pack mechanics rather than any client mod. Here is what happens in-game once it is loaded:

  1. 1Uses entity handling to clear or block the Enderman carried-block state every tick
  2. 2Prevents the pickup action so Endermen never grab a block in the first place
  3. 3Stops placement, so any held block cannot be set down into the world
  4. 4Leaves teleportation, aggro, and combat with players entirely vanilla

Supported Versions

1.201.20.11.20.41.211.21.4

Compatibility

Compatible with all data packs.

  • Targets only Endermen, so it will not interfere with creeper, ghast, or villager farming packs
  • Avoids the broad mobGriefing gamerule, keeping other griefing behaviours intact
  • May overlap with comprehensive anti-grief packs that also govern Enderman carrying

Anti Enderman Grief is a pure data pack and does not ship a resource pack, so it changes server-side behaviour without altering textures, models or sounds on the client.

How to Install

Anti Enderman Grief installs as a standard Java Edition data pack and runs on both singleplayer worlds and multiplayer servers. Recent 1.21 releases bumped the data pack format, so keep the pack's pack.mcmeta in step with your server version.

  1. 1.Download the Anti Enderman Grief pack as a .zip and keep it zipped.
  2. 2.Open the target world folder — a singleplayer save under .minecraft/saves, or the world folder on your server.
  3. 3.Drop the .zip into that world's datapacks folder, creating the folder if it does not exist.
  4. 4.Load the world (or run /reload if it is already open) and run /datapack list to confirm it is enabled.

The pack is built for Minecraft 1.20 through 1.21.4, so it loads on vanilla Java without Fabric, Forge or any other mod loader. It is a safe drop-in for the datapacks folder and starts suppressing Enderman block changes as soon as the world reloads.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Minecraft versions are supported?

Anti Enderman Grief works on Java Edition 1.20, 1.20.1, 1.20.4, 1.21, and 1.21.4. Use the matching version download.

Do I need any mods to stop Enderman griefing?

No. It is a vanilla data pack that runs server-side on unmodified Java Edition.

Does this disable the mobGriefing gamerule?

No. It only blocks Endermen from carrying blocks, so other mob-griefing behaviours like creeper explosions remain active.

Will Endermen still attack and teleport?

Yes. Only block pickup and placement are removed; their hostility, staring mechanic, and teleporting stay fully vanilla.

Does it affect performance?

No. The pack is lightweight and has no noticeable performance impact on the server or client.
