Loot Data Packs
Custom loot tables, better mob drops, chest loot modifications, and treasure systems.
Vanilla Tweaks
Bats drop a membrane item when killed, giving them an actual use. Bat membranes can be used to craft slow falling potions.
Vanilla Tweaks
Shulkers always drop two shells instead of the default chance-based single drop. Makes shulker box farming more efficient.
Vanilla Tweaks
The Ender Dragon drops an elytra when killed. Provides an alternative to raiding End cities for your first elytra.
Vanilla Tweaks
All mobs have a chance to drop their head when killed. Collect decorative mob heads from every creature in the game.
Community
Pillagers and other illagers drop their weapons and equipment when killed. Crossbows, axes, and iron items become lootable.
How loot packs change drops
Drops come from loot tables, JSON files in data/<namespace>/loot_table. Before 1.21 the folder was called loot_tables, which is the first thing to check when an old pack seems to do nothing. A pack changes a vanilla drop by putting a file at the same path in the minecraft namespace. Loot tables decide what chests in structures hold, what mobs and blocks drop and what you fish up, and when two packs replace the same table, only the one loaded last counts.
- Double Shulker Shells
- In Java a shulker drops a shell half the time, plus 6.25% per level of Looting. A shulker box takes two shells and a chest, so two guaranteed shells mean one box per kill.
- More Mob Heads
- In vanilla a charged creeper's explosion makes five mobs drop their head: skeletons, zombies, creepers, piglins and wither skeletons. Apart from the dragon head on End ships, other mobs have no head item at all until a pack adds one.
- Bat Membranes
- Phantom membranes normally come only from phantoms, which drop none or one when a player kills them, and phantoms only show up after three in-game days without sleep.
- Dragon Drops Elytra
- In vanilla every elytra hangs in an item frame on an End ship, and the dragon egg only appears after the first dragon kill.
- Pillager Tools Drop
- A pillager killed by a player has an 8.5% chance to drop its crossbow, plus 1% per level of Looting.
What decides a drop
Conditions inside a table do most of the work. In Java 26.2 oak leaves drop themselves only to shears or Silk Touch; otherwise a sapling drops 5% of the time, rising to 6.25%, 8.33% and 10% with Fortune I to III. Diamond ore drops itself with Silk Touch and a diamond without it, and Fortune adds extra diamonds through the ore drop formula. A pack that rewrites one of these tables has to keep those branches, or Silk Touch stops working on that block.
Fishing picks from three tables weighted 85 for fish, 10 for junk and 5 for treasure, and treasure only counts when the bobber sits in open water. Each entry also has a quality that shifts its weight with luck, which is how Luck of the Sea III raises treasure from 5% to about 11.3%.
Chests in structures don't hold their loot until someone interacts with them. They store a loot table and a seed, and the items appear when the chest is first opened or broken, so a pack that changes chest loot also reaches unopened chests in land you already explored.
Testing a loot table
You do not have to farm mobs to see whether a loot pack works. /loot give @s loot minecraft:entities/shulker rolls the shulker table once and puts the result in your inventory, and chest tables such as minecraft:chests/end_city_treasure work the same way.
