Unpackable Ice

by Vanilla Tweaks

Unpack packed ice back into regular ice and blue ice back into packed ice. Reverses the packing recipes.

Overview

Unpackable Ice is a small Vanilla Tweaks convenience pack that reverses the ice compression recipes Minecraft normally treats as one way. With it installed you can craft blue ice back down into packed ice and packed ice back down into regular ice. This is handy when you over-produce dense ice for boat highways or trading and want softer ice for other builds. The recipes live on a normal crafting table and behave like any vanilla recipe.

Useful for ice-highway builders and traders who sometimes craft too much packed or blue ice and need to step it back down. It comes from Vanilla Tweaks, sits in the Crafting category, and is rated a simple, drop-in pack to run. Everything happens through vanilla data pack functions, so no mod loader such as Fabric or Forge is required to use it on Minecraft 1.20 through 1.21.4.

How It Works

Under the hood, Unpackable Ice relies on plain data pack mechanics rather than any client mod. Here is what happens in-game once it is loaded:

  1. 1A crafting recipe converts one blue ice block into packed ice, undoing the nine-to-one compression.
  2. 2A second recipe turns packed ice back into regular ice along the same reverse path.
  3. 3Both recipes are defined as data pack JSON and surface in the recipe book on reload.
  4. 4Conversions run on a standard crafting table with no special station or trigger needed.

Supported Versions

1.201.20.11.20.41.211.21.4

Compatibility

Compatible with all data packs.

  • Compatible with all data packs since it only registers two reverse crafting recipes.
  • May conflict with another pack that adds the same ice unpacking recipe identifiers.
  • Does not change ice physics or generation, only the crafting recipes available to you.

Unpackable Ice is a pure data pack and does not ship a resource pack, so it changes server-side behaviour without altering textures, models or sounds on the client.

How to Install

Unpackable Ice installs as a standard Java Edition data pack and runs on both singleplayer worlds and multiplayer servers. Recent 1.21 releases bumped the data pack format, so keep the pack's pack.mcmeta in step with your server version.

  1. 1.Download the Unpackable Ice pack as a .zip and keep it zipped.
  2. 2.Open the target world folder — a singleplayer save under .minecraft/saves, or the world folder on your server.
  3. 3.Drop the .zip into that world's datapacks folder, creating the folder if it does not exist.
  4. 4.Load the world (or run /reload if it is already open) and run /datapack list to confirm it is enabled.

The pack is built for Minecraft 1.20 through 1.21.4, so it loads on vanilla Java without Fabric, Forge or any other mod loader. Add the pack to the datapacks folder and reload, and the unpack recipes for blue ice and packed ice become immediately craftable.
