Larger Phantoms
by Community
Phantoms grow larger the longer you stay awake, becoming more dangerous and dropping better loot. Adds risk-reward to insomnia.
Overview
Larger Phantoms ties the size of every phantom to how long a player has gone without sleep, so the swarms arriving after several insomnia nights tower over the usual scrawny ones. Each step up in scale increases melee damage and the membranes dropped on death, turning sleep deprivation into a genuine gamble. Growth is bounded so phantoms never balloon past a fixed ceiling, keeping fights threatening but survivable. It rewards farmers who ride out long awake streaks while punishing explorers who skip their beds.
Best for survival and SMP players who want phantom encounters to escalate meaningfully and reward staying awake for stronger membrane yields. It comes from Community, sits in the Mobs category, and is rated a moderate pack to run. Everything happens through vanilla data pack functions, so no mod loader such as Fabric or Forge is required to use it on Minecraft 1.20 through 1.21.4.
Features
- Phantom size scales with insomnia
- Bigger phantoms deal more damage
- Bigger phantoms drop more membranes
- Caps at a maximum size
How It Works
Under the hood, Larger Phantoms relies on plain data pack mechanics rather than any client mod. Here is what happens in-game once it is loaded:
- 1Tracks each player's time-since-rest statistic to decide which size tier a spawning phantom receives.
- 2Applies a scale attribute or NBT modifier to phantoms so larger ones are visibly and mechanically bigger.
- 3Scales attack damage upward with size so bigger phantoms hit noticeably harder on contact.
- 4Boosts the membrane loot table roll for larger phantoms while clamping growth at a hard maximum.
Supported Versions
Compatibility
Compatible with most data packs.
- Pairs naturally with phantom-themed or insomnia-focused packs that add membrane uses or new phantom drops.
- May overlap with packs that also rewrite phantom loot tables or attributes, so the last loaded pack wins.
- Safe alongside difficulty and mob tweak packs that do not touch phantom scaling or spawning.
Larger Phantoms is a pure data pack and does not ship a resource pack, so it changes server-side behaviour without altering textures, models or sounds on the client.

How to Install
Larger Phantoms installs as a standard Java Edition data pack and runs on both singleplayer worlds and multiplayer servers. Recent 1.21 releases bumped the data pack format, so keep the pack's pack.mcmeta in step with your server version.
- 1.Download the Larger Phantoms pack as a .zip and keep it zipped.
- 2.Open the target world folder — a singleplayer save under .minecraft/saves, or the world folder on your server.
- 3.Drop the .zip into that world's datapacks folder, creating the folder if it does not exist.
- 4.Load the world (or run /reload if it is already open) and run /datapack list to confirm it is enabled.
The pack is built for Minecraft 1.20 through 1.21.4, so it loads on vanilla Java without Fabric, Forge or any other mod loader. Drop it into the world datapacks folder and reload; size scaling applies to phantoms that spawn after loading, not ones already in the world.

Which Minecraft versions does Larger Phantoms support?
It targets Java Edition 1.20, 1.20.1, 1.20.4, 1.21, and 1.21.4. Run the matching pack format for your server version.
Do I need Fabric or Forge mods to use it?
No. It is a server-side vanilla data pack, so it runs on an unmodified Java server or single-player world with no loader required.
Why are some phantoms huge and others normal sized?
Size follows your insomnia. The longer a player goes without sleeping, the larger the phantoms that hunt them become, up to a capped maximum.
Do bigger phantoms actually drop more loot?
Yes. Larger phantoms deal more damage and drop additional phantom membranes, so surviving a big swarm is more rewarding than a small one.
Will phantoms grow without limit if I never sleep?
No. Growth is capped at a fixed maximum size, so phantoms stop scaling past that ceiling no matter how long you stay awake.
Does sleeping reset the phantom size?
Sleeping resets the insomnia timer just like vanilla, so phantoms return to normal scale once your time-awake counter is cleared.
